Did you know?
Over the past decade, autonomous shopping technology has gone from strength to strength.
The results are especially promising in high traffic environments where customers are short on time like in stadiums, airports, universities and more.
Additionally, there is demand in remote settings such as mining sites in Australia, where hundreds of workers operate on rotating shifts around the clock. They need access to essentials, but staffing has made it difficult to keep traditional shops open for long periods of time.
The success of autonomous stores is in the combination of location, technology, design, planning, launch and training, all of which need to work together for optimal results.
As front end specialists passionate about the customer checkout experience, here is what we have learnt.
Customers tell us…
When customers are short on time, they want:
- No queues/stress – they don’t want to miss the game, concert or flight.
- No friction/hassles – no scan, no wallets, no hassle.
Customers always want:
- Always open – no “closed” sign at the door.
- Space – bright, easy to navigate, room to move around, comfortable.
- Ergonomics – products that are easy to reach.
- Premium experience – feeling cutting-edge and cool.
Businesses tell us…
Businesses are seeing benefits such as:
- Increased sales and revenue from faster throughput and 24/7 availability.
- Labour efficiency – fewer staff compared to a traditional staffed kiosk. Team members can be redeployed to premium service areas as required.
- Consistent service quality – minimises human error or variability such as slow service.
- Lower operating costs – reduced wage bill, HR overheads.
- Optimised space use – smaller footprint, freeing space for other revenue-generating areas.
- Scalability – multiple compact stores spaces across concourse/venue to balance foot traffic.
- Sponsorship potential – for example, The Heineken Smart Bar.
